In Rolo to the Rescue, a 1992 action-platformer developed by Vectordean and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Genesis, you play as a young elephant escaping from a circus. Rather than just making your way to the exit, the core of the game revolves around rescuing other captive animals who then join your party, each bringing unique abilities needed to navigate the game’s branching map.
How to play
Your objective is to find and unlock animal cages scattered throughout each level. You can switch between Rolo and your rescued companions to use their specific skillsโlike the rabbit’s high jump, the squirrel’s climbing, or the mole’s diggingโto reach new areas. Control your characters using the arrow keys to move, Enter to start or pause, and S, X, and Z for your Genesis A, B, and C buttons (used for jumping, attacking, and switching animals).
Tips
- Your animal companions can take a hit for you, but they’ll run away if they do. You can find them again if you return to where you originally rescued them.
- Rolo’s trunk attack is short-range. Instead of engaging enemies directly, try to jump on them or use your companions’ abilities when possible.
- The world map is non-linear. If you’re stuck in a stage, try exploring a different path to find an animal whose ability might help you progress.
