Game description:

Rolan’s Curse II is a 1992 action-adventure for the Game Boy that builds significantly on its predecessor with a deep, party-based system. Played from a top-down perspective reminiscent of early Legend of Zelda titles, you begin your journey as the swordsman Ray and can eventually recruit up to seven other heroes to stop the evil King Barius. The standout feature is the ability to form a party of four and switch between characters on the fly, utilizing their unique skills and attack types to overcome legions of monsters and challenging dungeons.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore the overworld, delve into dungeons, and defeat bosses to lift the curse over the land. The standard Game Boy controls apply: use the arrow keys to move, Z and X to attack or use magic, and Enter/Shift to pause or access your party and inventory screens.

Tips

  • Find your portraits: You do not level up by grinding enemies. Instead, your sword and magic stats increase when you find treasure chests containing your specific character’s portrait.
  • Switch often: Do not rely on just one character. Some enemies or situations are much easier to handle when you swap to a party member with ranged attacks or specialized magic.
  • Use the auto-map: It’s easy to get lost in the game’s labyrinths. Rely on the auto-map feature to keep track of where you’ve been and find unexplored rooms.
