Game description:

Rod Land Japan Bootleg runs the same game as Jaleco’s 1990 arcade platformer Rod Land, but from an unlicensed bootleg circuit board rather than an official Jaleco cabinet. As the fairy sisters Tam and Rit, you climb a monster-filled tower to rescue your mother, fighting not by jumping on enemies but by trapping them in a magic force-field and slamming them into the floor until they burst. One quirk arcade preservationists note about this particular bootleg: unlike the genuine board, which runs its program through an encryption chip, this set’s code is unencrypted, which is part of why it survives as a distinct, playable romset today.

How to Play

Clear every enemy on the screen to advance to the next floor. Arcade controls map the joystick to the arrow keys, with Z, X, or C as your action buttons (Shift to insert a coin, Enter to start). Use your wand to grab and slam enemies, and your secondary action to conjure a temporary magic ladder — only one can exist at a time, so plan your climbs and escapes around it.

Tips

  • Collect every flower on a stage before defeating the last enemy to trigger a bonus round where monsters turn into letters; spell “EXTRA” to earn an extra life.
  • An enemy trapped in your wand’s force-field can be thrown into other monsters, clearing tight groups faster than fighting them one at a time.
  • Your conjured ladder vanishes quickly, so save it for a genuine escape rather than casual movement.
