Robotron: 2084 is the definitive twin-stick arcade shooter, released for the Atari 7800 in 1982 by Williams Electronics and Vid Kidz. You play as a mutant savior trapped in a neon arena, tasked with rescuing the last human families while surviving endless, overwhelming swarms of rogue robots. The game is famous for its chaotic, fast-paced crowd control and its independent movement and firing mechanics.
How to Play
Your objective is to destroy all hostile robots to clear the wave, while touching human clones (Mom, Dad, and Mikey) to rescue them for massive bonus points. Use the Arrow Keys to move your character. On this single-controller layout, the X and Z keys act as your primary action buttons for firing. Press Enter to pause and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Rescue chains: Points for rescuing humans multiply with each consecutive rescue in a single wave. Grab them quickly before the Brain enemies reprogram them into deadly Progs.
- The indestructible Hulk: The large green Hulks cannot be killed by your lasers. Shooting them only pushes them back slightly, so focus on dodging them while clearing the other aggressive enemies.
- Prioritize spawners: Take out Spheroids and Quarks immediately, as they constantly spawn Enforcers and Tanks that will flood the screen with high-speed projectiles.
