Developed by SNK and released in 1991 for the Neo Geo MVS, Robo Army is a hard-hitting, futuristic beat ’em up set in a dystopian Neo-Detroit. Players take control of Maxima or Rocky—two powerful cyborg soldiers—on a mission to stop the mad scientist Jeed and his robotic forces. The game stands out from other brawlers of its era with its mechanical theme, letting you smash through cyborgs, collect power-ups that temporarily transform your character into an invulnerable armored vehicle, and use a variety of heavy-hitting cybernetic attacks.

How to Play

The objective is to fight your way through six side-scrolling stages, defeating waves of robotic enemies and a challenging boss at the end of each level. You have a health bar, and taking too much damage will cost a life. For browser play, insert virtual coins (typically Shift or 5) and press Enter to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move your cyborg in eight directions. Press Z to attack, X to jump, and press both together to execute a special desperation move that clears surrounding enemies at the cost of a small amount of health.

Tips

• Preserve your health by relying on standard combos and jump kicks; only use the desperation move when completely surrounded.
• Watch out for item containers like barrels and crates; they often hold health-restoring items or temporary invincibility power-ups.
• When fighting bosses, avoid standing directly in front of them for too long. Move vertically to dodge their charge attacks, then strike from an angle.
