Game description:

Rastan, released in arcades in 1987 by Taito, is a classic fantasy hack-and-slash platformer. Taking control of a fierce barbarian warrior, players hack their way through a harsh, mythological landscape filled with chimeras, skeletal warriors, and harpies. With its heavy, deliberate combat, excellent atmospheric soundtrack, and challenging level design, it remains a standout of late-1980s arcade action.

How to Play

Your objective is to battle through each treacherous stage and defeat the boss, ultimately seeking out a powerful dragon. The arcade controls are straightforward but require precise timing: use the arrow keys to move and crouch, and the action buttons (typically mapped to Z and X) to jump and swing your weapon. You can strike while jumping or ducking, which is essential for surviving the relentless enemy encounters.

Tips

  • Your default sword is relatively short. Prioritize picking up weapons like the axe, mace, or flaming sword, which provide much better range and attack power.
  • Master the downward thrust. Hitting attack while in the air and holding down allows you to strike enemies below you, making it an excellent approach for grounded foes.
  • Be cautious of water and fire hazards. Platforming is unforgiving, and falling into these hazards will instantly cost you a life regardless of your health bar.
