Game description:

Released exclusively in Japan in 1999, Rally ’99 is an arcade-style rally racing game for the Nintendo 64 developed by Genki and published by Imagineer. Better known to Western players as Rally Challenge 2000, this title features licensed rally cars from the late 90s World Rally Championship and delivers fast-paced off-road racing across varied terrain. While the menus are in Japanese, the core racing experience remains highly accessible, offering classic N64 drifting and time-trial gameplay.

How to play

Compete against the clock and rival drivers across multiple rally stages. Keep your car on the track and master the timing of your drifts to maintain top speed. In your browser emulator, use the Arrow keys to steer, press Z to accelerate, and X to brake or reverse. Use Enter to pause the game or navigate the menus.

Tips

  • The game relies heavily on momentum; lightly tapping the brake (X) while turning will initiate a drift, allowing you to slide through tight corners without losing too much speed.
  • Pay attention to the co-driver’s visual pace notes at the top of the screen to anticipate upcoming sharp turns before they come into view.
  • If you’re navigating the Japanese menus, the first option on the main screen is typically the Championship mode, while the second is often a single race or time trial.
