Puzzled, originally released in Japan as Joy Joy Kid, is a block-stacking puzzle game developed by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade system in 1990. While heavily inspired by Tetris, it introduces a unique twist: your main objective is to clear a path for a hot-air balloon trapped at the bottom of the screen so it can float safely to the top. Rather than simply surviving as long as possible, each level requires you to strategically place falling blocks to clear horizontal lines specifically where they obstruct the balloon’s ascent.
How to Play
Your goal is to guide the hot-air balloon to the top of the screen by clearing the blocks in its way. Press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move the falling pieces left and right, and the Up Arrow to rotate them. Press Z or X to drop the pieces into place. Creating a solid horizontal line of blocks will cause that line to disappear, allowing the balloon to rise if the path above it is clear. You also have access to a special “L-Balloon” power that can blast away surrounding blocks.
Tips
- Focus on the balloon: Prioritise clearing lines that are directly above your hot-air balloon. Clearing lines on the other side of the screen won’t help the balloon ascend and may unintentionally block your future moves.
- Save your blasts: You only have a limited number of L-Balloon blasts per stage. Save them for emergencies when your path is completely blocked and standard piece placements won’t save you.
