Punch-Out!! is Nintendo’s 1984 arcade boxing game, and this is the original Japanese release — recognizable by its uncensored opponent roster, including Vodka Drunkenski, whose name was changed to Soda Popinski for the game’s Western release. You play an unnamed challenger working through a gauntlet of larger-than-life boxers, each with a distinct rhythm of punches and tells to learn.
How to Play
Move left and right to dodge incoming punches, and watch each opponent for the visual cue that flags an opening — a wind-up, a flinch, a color change — then strike with a left or right punch to the body or head before they recover. Landing clean hits fills your star meter; a full meter lets you unleash a knockdown uppercut. Take too many hits without dodging and you’ll be counted out.
- Arrow keys — dodge left / right
- Z — left punch
- X — right punch
Tips
- Every opponent telegraphs their punches before throwing them — learn the tell instead of dodging on reaction, since by the time you see the punch itself it’s often too late.
- Body shots build your star meter faster than head shots but leave you open longer; mix in quick jabs to the head when an opponent is stunned.
- Losing patience and swinging blindly gets you knocked down — a clean read-and-punish rhythm beats button mashing against every boxer in this game.
