Game description:

PuLiRuLa is a highly surreal and visually bizarre side-scrolling beat ’em up released for the Arcade by Taito in 1991. You play as Zac or Mel, traveling through radically different dream-like towns to recover the flow of time, which has been stolen by a mysterious bad guy. Known for its completely absurd enemy designs, vibrant art style, and abstract stages, it stands out as one of the most eccentric games in Taito’s arcade library.

How to Play

As a classic arcade beat ’em up, your goal is to walk to the right and defeat all the bizarre enemies that cross your path. At the end of each town, you’ll fight an eccentric boss to clear the stage.

Controls:

  • Insert Coin: Shift
  • Start: Enter
  • Move: Arrow Keys
  • Attack: Z
  • Jump: X
  • Magic: C

Tips

  • Your magic attack clears the screen or deals heavy damage, but uses up a magic stock. Save it for bosses or when you are completely overwhelmed.
  • The attack hitboxes can be surprisingly narrow. Make sure you are on the exact same horizontal plane as the enemy before striking.
  • Keep moving! Enemies can swarm you quickly from off-screen, so don’t linger in one spot.
