Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow & The Flame is an action-platformer by Jordan Mechner released for the Sega Genesis in 1993. The Prince, victorious at the end of the first game, returns home to find himself displaced by an impostor — Jaffar’s sorcery alive again, his throne stolen. He must fight across treacherous palaces and ruins to reclaim it. Rotoscoped animation gives the character the same fluid, physical quality that made the original a landmark.
How to Play
Movement in Prince of Persia 2 is deliberate: the Prince commits to each step, and one step too far means a fatal drop. Use the D-pad to move, Up to jump, and Down to crouch or hang from a ledge. A running jump clears gaps a standing jump cannot — build momentum before you leap. Sword combat is a patient duel: retreat to draw an attack, then advance and strike the moment the enemy overextends.
Keyboard controls (mapped from the Genesis pad):
- Arrow keys — move, jump (↑), crouch / hang (↓)
- S / X / Z — A / B / C buttons
- Enter — Start (pause)
- Shift — Mode button
Tips
- Walk along every unfamiliar ledge before committing to a run — an unplanned step off the edge is fatal.
- In sword fights, patience wins: wait for the enemy to swing first, then counter while they recover.
- Drink every health potion you find — guards become more numerous later and every hit point matters.
