Released in 1990 by Tecmo, Power Racer is a fast-paced arcade maze game for the Game Boy based on the classic Head On. Instead of a traditional race, you navigate concentric rectangular lanes to collect every dot on the track before a rival car crashes into you. The Game Boy version retains the original addictive loop while introducing an exclusive special mode that adds environmental hazards like oil slicks and conveyor belts to the track.
How to Play
Your objective is to clear all the dots from the stage without colliding with the enemy car traveling in the opposite direction. Since your vehicle moves forward automatically, your focus is entirely on timing lane changes. Use the D-pad (mapped to the Arrow keys) to switch between lanes at the open gaps. Hold the A or B Button (Z or X keys) to accelerate, which is vital for narrowly dodging the opponent. Press Start (Enter) to pause.
Tips
- Anticipate the enemy path: The rival car will actively try to hunt you down by changing lanes. Watch its movements closely and try to stay on the opposite side of the track to give yourself maximum reaction time.
- Use acceleration strategically: Rely on the speed boost only when you need to narrowly dodge the opponent or snatch a dot before a crash. Holding it constantly makes it very easy to overshoot the gaps where you can change lanes.
