Phantasm, released for the Game Boy in 1992 by Jaleco (and widely known outside Japan as Avenging Spirit), is an inventive action-platformer where you play as a ghost seeking to rescue his girlfriend from a crime syndicate. Instead of fighting directly, you must possess the bodies of various enemiesโsuch as gangsters, ninjas, and vampiresโusing their unique weapons and abilities to survive.
How to Play
Fight through six stages by possessing enemies and utilizing their unique attacks. Swap bodies before your current host’s health runs out or your ghost energy depletes.
- D-pad (Arrow Keys): Move your character or float as a ghost.
- A Button (Z): Jump or float higher.
- B Button (X): Attack using the possessed enemy’s weapon.
- Start (Enter): Pause the game.
- Select (Shift): Leave your current body to possess a new host.
Tips
- Do not stay outside a body for long, as your ghost energy constantly drains when floating between hosts.
- Experiment with different enemy types; characters like the ninja are faster, while others offer powerful projectile attacks that can keep bosses at a distance.
- Pay attention to your host’s health bar. It is often safer to abandon a heavily damaged body for a fresh one rather than risking a game over.
