Phantasm Japan is a unique side-scrolling action platformer released for the Arcade in 1990 by Jaleco (originally developed by C.P. Brain). Better known internationally as Avenging Spirit, players take on the role of a ghost who must possess the bodies of various enemies to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend from a mysterious crime syndicate.
How to Play
The core objective is to reach the end of each stage while keeping your host body alive. When your host takes too much damage, you are forced out into ghost form and must quickly find another enemy to possess before your ghost energy depletes. Use the Arrow Keys to move, the Z key to attack using your host’s unique abilities, and the X key to jump. Insert a coin with Shift and press Enter to start.
Tips
- Always be on the lookout for stronger host bodies; enemies like the dragon or the gangster with a machine gun offer significant advantages over basic grunts.
- If you lose a host during a boss fight, wait for the boss to summon minions so you can possess them instead of fighting in your vulnerable ghost form.
- Each possessed character has different jump heights and movement speedsโtest them safely before rushing into dangerous platforming sections.
