Released by Konami in 1990, Parodius Da! (often known by its arcade ROM name, Parodius Da Japan) is a legendary horizontal shoot ’em up that brilliantly parodies the company’s own Gradius series. Instead of a serious sci-fi setting, you pilot bizarre charactersโlike the Vic Viper, TwinBee, Pentarou the penguin, or Takosuke the octopusโthrough absurd, brightly colored stages. The game takes the intense, strategic gameplay of Gradius and wraps it in a surreal world filled with flying pirate penguins, giant showgirls, and moai ships, all set to an upbeat soundtrack of remixed classical music.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the side-scrolling stages, defeat the eccentric bosses, and score as high as possible. The game uses a power-up bar system identical to Gradius: collecting red capsules advances the highlighted power-up, and you press a button to activate the selected upgrade. For browser play, the standard arcade controls apply: press 5 to insert a coin and 1 to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move your character, press Z to shoot, and press X to activate your current power-up.
Tips
- Watch the Bells: Shooting the floating bells changes their color. Each color grants a different special ability, like a massive megaphone laser or a temporary shield, so time your shots carefully before collecting them.
- Choose Your Character Wisely: Each of the four characters has a unique weapon loadout. If you prefer a wide spread of fire, TwinBee is a great choice, while Vic Viper offers the classic Gradius laser and missile combination.
- Don’t Get Greedy: Like Gradius, losing a life strips away all your accumulated power-ups. Sometimes it is safer to let a risky capsule go rather than dying and having to rebuild your ship’s strength from scratch.
