Parodius Da! is a 1990 arcade shoot-’em-up from Konami, the second entry in the Parodius series that turns the company’s own serious Gradius saga into a running joke. It plays on the same horizontally-scrolling shooting engine as Gradius, but swaps alien battleships for giant Easter Island heads, dancing enemies, and other visual gags, all set to a cheerful soundtrack. Instead of one fixed ship, you choose from four playable characters — Vic Viper (Gradius’ own fighter), TwinBee, Octopus, and the penguin Pentarou — each with its own weapon layout built on a shared power-up system.
How to Play
Fly through 10 stages, looping twice, shooting enemies and dodging terrain while collecting red power-up capsules. Capsules advance a meter at the bottom of the screen through Speed Up, Missile, Double or Laser, Option, and Shield; press the power-up button when the meter lands on the upgrade you want. Yellow bells, a series trademark borrowed from TwinBee, award points, while blue, white, green, and red bells trigger a screen-clearing bomb, a shockwave, a size-changing effect, or a laser barrier. In the browser, move with the arrow keys, fire with Z, and activate the power-up meter with X.
Tips
- TwinBee is generally the easiest character to start with, while Pentarou is considered the hardest — pick TwinBee or Octopus if you’re new to the game.
- Don’t grab capsules on reflex: wait until the meter lines up with the upgrade you actually need, since extra capsules just cycle past it.
- The colored bells are usually worth more than the yellow point bells when you’re in danger — the bomb and shield effects can bail you out of a tight spot.
