Pac-Man (Midway, Harder) is a 1981 arcade maze-chase — a tougher build of Namco’s original Pac-Man, released under Midway’s US arcade license. It keeps the same maze and cast of ghosts as the classic release, but this variant is tuned to push back harder against the memorized patterns many players use to clear the original.
How to Play
Guide Pac-Man around the maze, eating every dot while staying clear of the four ghosts — Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. Grab one of the four large power pellets in the corners to briefly turn the ghosts blue and vulnerable, letting you eat them for bonus points before they recover. Bonus fruit appears in the middle of the maze twice per stage for extra points. Lose all your lives to ghost contact outside of a power pellet and it’s game over. Movement is the only input — there’s no separate action button, just the joystick (arrow keys in the browser). Use Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start.
Tips
- Chain ghosts during a single power pellet instead of eating them one at a time across separate pellets — each successive ghost eaten in the same vulnerable window is worth double the last (200, 400, 800, 1600 points).
- Start turning just before you reach an intersection rather than at it — Pac-Man’s movement is grid-locked, so early turns lose less speed than late ones.
- Because this is the harder romset, don’t rely on safety margins that work on the standard Pac-Man release — react a beat sooner than muscle memory expects.
