OutRunners is SEGA’s 1993 Sega Genesis port of their 1992 arcade sequel to Out Run. You choose from eight cars — each with its own handling characteristics and dedicated music track — then race branching highway stages against the clock and oncoming traffic. At every junction you pick your next destination, so the route through the game and the final outcome depend on the choices you make along the way. Two players can race simultaneously in split-screen, each on a separate track.
How to play
The goal is to reach each stage checkpoint before the timer expires. At every fork in the road, choose which branch to take next — the game has multiple routes and different finales depending on those decisions.
- Steer: ← / → arrow keys
- Accelerate: X key (Genesis B)
- Brake: Z key (Genesis C)
- Genesis A: S key
- Start / Pause: Enter
Tips
- Each car handles differently — try a couple on the opening stretch before settling on one.
- Brake before a corner, not through it; a clean entry is faster than correcting a wide line mid-turn.
- The branching structure gives the game real replay value: later stages change entirely depending on earlier choices.
