Oriental Legend Special is IGS’s 1998 revision of Oriental Legend, a side-scrolling action game for its PGM arcade hardware that turns the Chinese classic Journey to the West into a co-op brawler. Players choose one of five pilgrims – Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, Long Ma, or Long Nui – each tied to one of the Five Elements (fire, earth, water, wood, and metal) with a different weapon and elemental magic, then fight through waves of demons and stage bosses solo or with a second player.
How to Play
Move with the joystick, Attack to strike (or pick up a dropped item), Jump to leap over enemies (or toggle your inventory), and Guard to block (or open your inventory). Press Attack and Jump together for a spinning special attack, or hold all three buttons to charge power and unleash your character’s secret technique. In the browser that’s arrow keys to move, Z for Attack, X for Jump, and C for Guard, with Enter to start and Shift to insert a coin.
Tips
- Hold Attack+Jump+Guard to charge the power gauge between fights – Special’s four-stage version unlocks a stronger secret technique at each stage, so save a full charge for boss fights rather than spending it early.
- Losing your weapon isn’t a dead end: every pilgrim has a distinct unarmed special – Sun Wukong summons monkey replicas, Zhu Bajie slams the ground for an earthquake, Sha Wujing raises a spirit wall, Long Ma calls golden dragon spirits, and Long Nui unleashes a blinding light – so keep attacking while you look for it.
