Onyanko Town is a 1985 top-down maze action game developed by Micronics and published for the NES (Famicom). You play as a mother cat named Milky on a mission to navigate a sprawling, dangerous city block to rescue her lost kitten, Michael. The game combines fast-paced evasion with light puzzle elements as you weave through alleyways, avoid hostile neighborhood animals, and figure out the safest route back home.
How to play
The goal of each level is to find Michael hidden somewhere in the maze and safely guide him back to your starting house. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move Milky. The A button (Z key) allows you to jump over small walls and hedges to escape danger, though you lose this ability while carrying the kitten. The B button (X key) is used to open and close manholes, which you can use strategically to trap pursuing dogs.
Tips
- Trap enemies early: Lure pursuing dogs toward open manholes and shut them once they fall in. This clears the streets and makes escorting Michael much safer.
- Use the fish carefully: Collecting a fish makes you temporarily invincible to dogs, but be prepared to dodge the angry fishmonger who will chase you down.
- Plan your return trip: Before picking up Michael, ensure you have a clear path back to your house, as your inability to jump while holding him makes you highly vulnerable.
