Game description:

Nova 2001 is a multidirectional shoot ’em up released for the arcade by UPL in 1983. Piloting a lone spaceship, players must survive against relentless swarms of enemy craft across numerous stages, relying on sharp reflexes and a unique twin-button firing mechanic to stay alive.

How to Play

The objective is to clear each stage by destroying all enemy waves. You can move and shoot in eight directions. Your primary button fires, while holding the secondary button locks your current firing direction, allowing your ship to move independently while continuing to shoot the same way. By default, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to fire, X to lock direction, Enter to Start, and Shift to insert coins.

Tips

  • Lock and Retreat: Master the direction-lock button early. It is essential for flying backwards out of danger while continuing to lay down suppressive fire.
  • Block Management: Destroyed enemies often leave behind numbered blocks. While these grant bonus points, they also absorb your bullets. Clear them out or maneuver around them so they do not shield incoming enemies.
  • Shoot the Bullets: Unlike many shooters of the era, you can shoot down enemy projectiles. Keep firing rapidly if you get cornered.
