Ninja Ryukenden, known in the West as Ninja Gaiden, is Tecmo’s legendary 1988 action-platformer for the NES. You play as Ryu Hayabusa on a quest to avenge his father, battling through six acts of fast-paced, side-scrolling action. Renowned for its tight controls, memorable soundtrack, and pioneering cinematic cutscenes, it remains one of the most celebrated and notoriously challenging titles of the 8-bit era.
How to Play
Guide Ryu to the end of each stage while surviving relentless enemy waves and tricky platforming. Mastering your agility to cling to and leap off walls is crucial.
- D-pad (Move): Arrow Keys
- A Button (Jump): Z
- B Button (Slash): X
- Sub-weapon: Up + X
- Start: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Master Wall Jumping: Ryu can cling to walls but cannot scale them directly. Jump away from the wall and immediately steer back toward it to climb higher.
- Conserve Ninja Power: Your red points fuel your sub-weapons. Save them for the powerful Spin Slash (Jump & Slash) to deal massive damage during boss fights.
- Mind the Enemy Spawns: Enemies continuously respawn if you backtrack even slightly. Keep pressing forward to avoid getting overwhelmed by fast-moving birds and other foes.
