Released in 1987 by Irem, Mr Heli No Dai Bouken (also known as Battle Chopper) is a multi-directional arcade shooter with a unique twist. Instead of auto-scrolling horizontally, you pilot a helicopter that can both fly freely and walk on the ground. By blasting through destructible terrain, you uncover hidden crystals that act as currency to purchase powerful mid-stage upgrades like missiles, bombs, and shields.
How to Play
Your goal is to survive waves of enemies, navigate treacherous terrain, and defeat each stage’s boss. You can freely explore the screen to find hidden blocks. In the browser, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to fire your main weapon, and X to drop bombs or buy items. Press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to begin.
Tips
- Focus on collecting crystals early in the game to purchase a shield; it significantly increases your survivability against arcade-difficulty projectiles.
- When touching the ground, your helicopter extends its landing gear. This walking state changes how your bombs behave, allowing them to roll along the floor to hit low enemies.
- Don’t rush ahead. Take your time to destroy environmental blocks, as they often hide extra currency or reveal safer pathways through the level.
