Monster Party is a surreal, horror-themed platformer released for the NES in 1989, developed by Human Entertainment and published by Bandai. You play as Mark, an ordinary kid armed with a baseball bat who is dragged into a bizarre “Dark World” by a gargoyle named Bert. The game is famous for its bizarre array of bossesโincluding a fried shrimp, dancing zombies, and a giant dead spiderโand its unexpectedly gruesome visual changes midway through the first level.
How to Play
Your main objective is to clear all eight levels by finding and defeating each stage’s bizarre bosses to obtain a key, which opens the exit door. You primarily control Mark, who can swing his bat to hit enemies and deflect projectiles back at them. Defeating enemies sometimes drops a pill that temporarily transforms you into Bert the gargoyle, granting you the ability to fly and shoot powerful lasers.
- Move: Arrow keys (D-pad)
- Jump: Z key (A button)
- Attack: X key (B button)
- Pause: Enter (Start button)
Tips
- Deflect to win: Mark’s bat swing can reflect many enemy projectiles, which is crucial for defeating certain bosses without taking damage.
- Save the transformation: Because Bert’s flying and laser abilities are temporary, try to grab the transformation pills right before entering a boss room.
- Boss locations: You don’t have to defeat every boss in a stage, only the ones necessary to find the key to the exit. Keep exploring the doors if you haven’t found it yet.
