Released in 2000 by Takumi and Capcom, Mars Matrix: Hyper Solid Shooting is an intense arcade shoot ’em up that turns the bullet hell genre on its head. Instead of simply dodging waves of enemy fire, you pilot a heavily armed ship capable of harvesting incoming projectiles. With its innovative mechanics and deep scoring system, it remains a standout title in the arcade shooter library.
How to Play
Your objective is to blast through vertical-scrolling stages, defeat massive bosses, and collect experience cubes to power up. Default arcade controls map movement to the Arrow Keys and your attacks to a primary action key (typically Z, X, or Space in the browser). Mars Matrix uses a unique single-button system: tap rapidly for standard fire, tap slowly for a piercing cannon, and hold the button to activate the Mosquito System to absorb enemy bullets. Releasing the button reflects the attack, while holding it until the meter depletes unleashes a devastating Gravity Hole Bomb.
Tips
- Master the Mosquito System: Your shield meter takes a moment to recharge. Use short bursts to reflect bullets and clear immediate threats, saving the full Gravity Hole Bomb for emergencies when you are totally cornered.
- Farm Experience Cubes: Destroying enemies with reflected bullets turns them into showers of gold cubes. Scoop these up constantly to level up your primary weapon and multiply your score, but don’t fly into danger just to grab them.
