Manhattan 24 Bunsyo is a 1986 side-scrolling run-and-gun arcade game developed by Konami. Widely known as Jail Break outside of Japan, the game puts you in the shoes of a lone police officer dealing with a massive prison breakout. Your mission is to battle through the streets, parks, and harbors of Manhattan to subdue escaped convicts, rescue civilian hostages, and ultimately save the prison warden.
How to play
Move left or right through scrolling environments while fighting off waves of inmates. You start with a standard pistol, but by rescuing civilian hostages, you can upgrade to a bazooka or a tear-gas launcher. Be careful with your aim—if you accidentally shoot a civilian, you will lose your special weapons and revert to the basic pistol. Use the standard arcade controls: the arrow keys to move, Z to shoot, and X to jump.
Tips
- Rescue every civilian you can to maintain access to powerful weapons like the bazooka, which makes clearing out large groups of inmates much easier.
- Watch your fire when civilians are on screen; losing your weapon upgrades in later stages will make survival extremely difficult.
- At the very end of the final stage, make sure not to shoot the warden, as doing so will cause an immediate game over.
