Game description:

Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Daiyouchienji is a charming, turn-based RPG released by Compile for the Super Famicom in 1996. Serving as a spin-off to the famous Puyo Puyo puzzle series, the game follows a young, kindergarten-aged Arle Nadja on a quest to gather eight magical stones for her final exam. The game stands out by eschewing traditional numeric stats; instead, Arle’s health and condition are conveyed entirely through her facial expressions and character sprites on screen.

How to Play

Combat is entirely magic-based, meaning there are no physical attacks. You will guide Arle through dungeons and use elemental spells like Fire, Ice Storm, and Thunder to exploit enemy weaknesses. As a Super Famicom title played in the browser, you can use the directional keys to navigate, with Z and X mapped to the console’s primary action buttons for interacting and making menu selections, and Enter to pause or start.

Tips

  • Pay close attention to Arle’s facial animations during battleโ€”since there are no HP bars, her expressions are your only warning when she is taking too much damage.
  • Learn enemy elemental weaknesses early on; using the wrong spell type will quickly drain your resources and leave you vulnerable.
  • Collect cookies throughout the dungeons, as they serve as the game’s currency for buying useful items and upgrades.
