Game description:

Flag Capture is a logic puzzle game released by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600 in 1978. Designed by Jim Huether as an early ancestor to games like Minesweeper, players explore a 9×7 grid to locate a hidden flag. Uncovering squares reveals clues, such as arrows pointing toward the objective or numbers indicating how far away it is, making it a thoughtful alternative to the twitch-based action games of its era.

How to play

The goal is to find the hidden flag as efficiently as possible while avoiding hidden bombs. Use the standard Atari 2600 controls mapped to your keyboard (arrow keys to move your cursor, and Z or X as the fire button to select a square) to uncover clues and deduce the flag’s location.

Tips

  • Pay close attention to the number clues; they indicate exactly how many spaces away the flag is located.
  • Arrows will point in the general direction of the flag, allowing you to safely eliminate large sections of the grid.
  • Use the clues logically rather than guessing blindly to minimize the risk of hitting a bomb.
