Released by Konami in 1990, Lightning Fighters (also known as Trigon in Japan) is a fast-paced vertical-scrolling arcade shooter. You pilot a lone spacecraft defending Earth from a massive alien armada, battling through nine challenging stages. The game is highly regarded for its intense difficulty and spectacular super weapons, specifically the tracking Dragon Laser and the screen-clearing Particle Beam.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive each stage and defeat the boss at the end, using weapon power-ups and well-timed super bombs. For arcade titles in the browser, use Shift (or 5) to insert coins, and Enter (or 1) to start. Move your ship with the Arrow Keys, fire your primary weapon with Z (or Ctrl), and unleash your collected super bombs with X (or Alt).
Gameplay Tips
- Mind your hitbox: Unlike modern bullet hell shooters where only the center of your ship is vulnerable, your entire craft can take damage. Give enemy fire a wider berth than you think you need.
- Stick to the Vulcan: While the Spread shot (S) offers good coverage, upgrading the Vulcan gun (V) to its maximum level provides rapid auto-fire that is much more reliable for clearing tough enemy waves.
- Save bombs for bosses: The Dragon Laser and Particle Beam are visually impressive but scarce. Hoard them for the end-of-stage encounters where their massive damage output is essential.
