Game description:

Liberty or Death is a turn-based historical strategy game set during the American Revolutionary War, released for the Sega Genesis in 1994 by Koei, the developer behind the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. In this console version you take command of either George Washington’s Continental Army or Sir Thomas Gage’s British forces, with the goal of eliminating every enemy regiment across the Thirteen Colonies. Turns pass in half-month increments over a 24-turn year, and success depends as much on managing budgets and political approval in Congress or Parliament as it does on winning battles.

How to Play

Each turn you allocate your district resources, move regiments across the colonial map, and resolve any clashes on a separate hex-based battle screen where infantry, cavalry, guerrilla/militia, and artillery units each have their own terrain strengths. Losing the confidence of the civilian and political leadership can shrink your military budget or get you removed from command entirely, so campaigns are won as much at the negotiating table as on the battlefield.

Tips

  • Move cavalry through open and forested ground and guerrilla/militia regiments through mountains — each troop type has clear terrain advantages the AI will exploit against you if you ignore them.
  • Keep an eye on political approval, not just the map: a Congress or Parliament that loses confidence in you cuts your budget and can vote to remove you as commander-in-chief regardless of how the war is going.
  • Turn off battle and scene animations in the options if you plan to play a full campaign — a single game can run to hundreds of turns, and the toggle speeds up the long stretches considerably.
