Game description:

Klax is a fast-paced 1989 puzzle game developed by Tengen for the Sega Genesis. Originally an arcade hit, it tasks you with catching colored tiles tumbling down a conveyor belt and arranging them into matching lines of three or more. Unlike falling-block games where pieces drop into a pit, here they come directly toward you, requiring you to juggle incoming tiles on your paddle before dropping them into the bin below.

How to Play

To clear a wave, you must meet its specific objective, such as catching a set number of tiles, reaching a score threshold, or creating horizontal, vertical, or diagonal matches (called “Klaxes”). Move your paddle left and right across the five lanes to catch tiles before they fall off the belt. Press the drop button to release the top tile from your paddle into the 5×5 bin below. You can hold up to five tiles at once on your paddle. If a tile hits the ground, or your bin fills up completely, you lose a drop.

Tips

  • Prioritize diagonals: Diagonal Klaxes score much higher than horizontal or vertical ones and are essential for meeting point-based wave requirements quickly.
  • Manage your paddle: Pressing Up (↑ on KB) tosses the top tile on your paddle back up the conveyor belt. This is crucial when your paddle is full and you need to delay a tile or rearrange colors.
  • Set up chain reactions: Dropping a tile to clear a line can cause the tiles above it to fall, potentially creating a second Klax for massive bonus points.
