Game description:

This is a preserved beta build (dated April 28, 1997) of the canceled PlayStation port of Killing Time, a horror-themed first-person shooter originally developed by Studio 3DO for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer in 1995. The PS1 version was ported by Torus Games for publisher Acclaim Entertainment, which had acquired the rights to bring several Studio 3DO titles to PlayStation, Saturn, and PC. According to Torus Games, the port was reportedly around 95% finished, complete with an announced release date and box art, before Acclaim pulled the plug on it at the last minute. A copy of this late prototype surfaced decades later and was preserved by archivists, which is the build playable here.

How to Play

You play a former Egyptology student trapped on the private island estate of the wealthy heiress Tess Conway, off the coast of Maine in 1932. Conway and her guests vanished during a solstice-night ritual with an ancient Egyptian Water-Clock said to grant eternal life, and the island is now overrun with the ghosts, demons, and undead the ritual unleashed. Your goal is to explore the estate, fight your way through its horrors, and find and destroy the Water-Clock. Along the way you can pick up a crowbar, dual pistols, a shotgun, a Thompson submachine gun, Molotov cocktails, a flamethrower, and a magical Ankh.

Default browser controls for the PS1 emulator are mapped as follows:

  • Arrow Keys (D-Pad): Move and turn
  • Z Key (Square Button): Fire current weapon
  • X Key (Cross Button): Jump
  • C Key (Circle Button): Interact / use item
  • S Key (Triangle Button): Switch weapon
  • Enter (Start): Pause / menu

Tips

  • Explore without fear of backtracking: the island is one seamless world with no loading screens between areas, and enemies you defeat or items you collect stay that way for the rest of the playthrough.
  • Watch for rough edges: because this is an unfinished prototype rather than a polished retail release, expect the occasional glitch or unpolished moment that a finished version would have ironed out.
