Game description:

Developed by Rare and released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold brought the frantic, combo-heavy fighting of the arcade sequel to the Nintendo 64. Rather than a straight arcade port, this home version added dedicated training modes, team battles, and unlockables while retaining the series’ signature auto-doubles and Combo Breakers. The fight system revolves heavily around memorizing specific attack strings to chain together massive, momentum-shifting combos rather than traditional poking and blocking.

How to Play

The objective is to deplete your opponent’s two health bars using a mix of special moves, linkers, and devastating enders. In the browser emulator, movement is mapped to your arrow keys. The N64’s six attack buttons (three punch strengths and three kick strengths) are typically mapped across your Z, X, A, S, Q, and W keys, with Enter serving as Start. Success requires learning your character’s unique button sequences to initiate and extend combos.

Tips

  • Learn the Combo Breaker timing: To successfully break an opponent’s combo, you must input your character’s breaker move using the attack strength that counters their current linker (e.g., use a medium breaker against a medium linker).
  • Master auto-doubles: Pressing a specific button immediately after a combo starter will automatically trigger a two-hit follow-up, providing the essential building block for longer, more damaging chains.
  • Use the practice modes: Gold features a robust training mode that teaches you the timing for basic combos and parries. Use it to build muscle memory before tackling the arcade ladder on higher difficulties.
