Game description:

Ken-Go (also known outside of Japan as Lightning Swords) is an arcade hack-and-slash beat-’em-up published by Irem in 1991. Set in a dark, fantasy-inspired version of feudal Japan, you control a samurai on a quest to avenge a princess. The game stands out from other action titles of its era by relying on a single, versatile action button for both attacking and defending.

How to Play

Instead of separate buttons for different moves, Ken-Go revolves around a unique charge mechanic. Pressing the button swings your katana, but holding it down causes your character to block incoming attacks. Continuing to hold the button charges your sword up to five levels, unleashing a devastating power strike when released. Use the arrow keys to move. Press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. Your sword is mapped to Z.

Tips

  • Master the block: Because you block while charging your sword, approaching difficult enemies by holding the action button allows you to safely close the distance while preparing a heavy attack.
  • Manage your charge time: You don’t always need a level-five strike. A level-two or three charge is often enough to dispatch weaker foes quickly without leaving yourself vulnerable for too long.
