Karate Champ is a pioneering 1986 fighting game for the NES. Originally developed by Technลs Japan and published by Data East, it helped establish the 1-on-1 fighting genre with its tournament-style, points-based karate matches.
How to Play
The objective is to win a series of martial arts matches by landing clean blows on your opponent to score points (a half-point or full-point) before the timer runs out. Use the NES controlsโD-pad to move, A and B to execute a variety of attacks and blocks, and Start/Select for menusโmapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys, Z and X, and Enter and Shift respectively. Combine directional presses with buttons for different moves.
Tips
- Patience and timing are more important than button mashing; wait for your opponent to strike, then block or evade and counter immediately.
- Managing the distance between fighters is crucial for landing high-scoring kicks or sweeps, as movement is restricted and jumping over your rival isn’t an option.
