Kaisen Game: Navy Blue is a tactical naval strategy game released for the Game Boy in 1989 by Use Corporation. Released exclusively in Japan before being localized internationally as simply Battleship, this title faithfully adapts the classic grid-based board game experience. Players position their fleet of ships across a grid and take turns firing blindly at their opponent’s board, attempting to deduce the location of enemy vessels and sink them before their own fleet is destroyed.
How to Play
The objective is to sink the opponent’s entire fleet by guessing the coordinates of their ships on a hidden grid. Before the battle begins, you must carefully arrange your own ships on your board.
Controls:
- D-pad (Arrow Keys): Move the cursor across the grid.
- A Button (Z Key): Select a coordinate to fire upon or confirm ship placement.
- B Button (X Key): Cancel a selection or rotate ships during the placement phase.
- Start (Enter): Pause the game or begin the match.
Tips
- Spread your fire: Instead of guessing adjacent squares randomly, fire in a checkerboard pattern. Since the smallest ship takes up two spaces, this guarantees you will eventually score a hit on any hidden vessel.
- Do not cluster your fleet: When placing your own ships, try to scatter them around the board and avoid placing them perfectly parallel to one another. Players often fire in straight lines once they find a hit, so keeping ships apart prevents giving away multiple positions at once.
