Kabuki – Quantum Fighter is a 1991 NES side-scrolling action game developed by Human Entertainment and published in Europe by Nintendo. It’s a slight reworking of the Japanese Famicom original, Jigoku Gokuraku Maru, released a few months earlier by Pack-In-Video. You play Colonel Scott O’Connor, digitized into binary code and sent inside Earth’s malfunctioning defense computer to purge an alien virus; once inside, his virtual form takes on the appearance of his kabuki-actor ancestor, complete with the character’s trademark long red hair.
How to play
Kabuki fights primarily by whipping his long hair at enemies in close range. Pressing Select cycles through chip-based ranged weapons picked up along the way, including an Energy Gun, Fusion Gun, Quantum Bombs, and a Remote-Controlled Bolo, and you’re awarded a new weapon chip for clearing each stage. Certain platforms let you grab on and swing across gaps, and every level ends in a boss fight. Default controls (no in-game remap listed): Arrow keys to move and duck, Z to jump, X to attack with the hair whip, Shift to cycle weapons, Enter for Start/Pause.
Tips:
- You take a lot of punishment before dying, and your life bar is partially refilled every time you reach a stage’s goal, so don’t play overly cautious through a level.
- During boss fights you can trade unused weapon chips for extra life energy â a handy way to turn stockpiled chips into survival if a boss is wearing you down.
- Stage 3 drops the enemies entirely for a vertical, obstacle-heavy platforming gauntlet, so treat it as a controls check rather than a combat stage.
