Joust is a classic 1982 arcade action game from Williams that made its way to DOS. You control a knight mounted on a flying ostrich, battling waves of enemy knights riding buzzards in an arena suspended over lava.
How to play
The core rule of combat is simple: during a collision, the rider who is higher wins. Defeating an enemy causes them to drop an egg. You must quickly collect these eggs before they hatch into faster, more dangerous enemies. On DOS, you steer left and right while repeatedly tapping the flap button to gain altitude. Since DOS keyboard controls can vary, experiment with the arrow keys to move, and Space, Alt, or Ctrl to flap.
Tips
- Take the high ground: Altitude is everything. Try to hover near the top of the screen or above spawn points to easily drop onto enemies.
- Beware the Lava Troll: In later waves, flying too close to the lava at the bottom of the screen will cause a troll hand to reach out and grab you.
- The Pterodactyl: If you take too long to finish a wave, a deadly pterodactyl will spawn. It is extremely difficult to kill and must be hit perfectly precisely on the tip of its beak.
