J.League Excite Stage ’96 is a fast-paced football game released for the Super Famicom (SNES) in 1996 by Epoch. Building upon previous entries in the Excite Stage series, this installment offers refined 16-bit arcade-style soccer featuring real J.League teams and players of the era. The game differentiates itself from other football simulations by focusing heavily on quick passing, first-touch strikes, and highly responsive player control.
How to Play
The standard controls map to the SNES layout. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move your players. On offense, the B button (X on keyboard) passes, the A button (Z) shoots, and the Y button (S) executes a chip shot or cross. On defense, use B to switch players and A to slide tackle. The L and R triggers (Q and W) can be used to dash or add power to certain actions.
Tips
- The Pass and Chip: A highly effective scoring technique involves passing the ball in the air and holding the Y button just before your receiver gets it. If timed right, your player will execute a swift chip shot that often catches the goalkeeper off guard, especially when aimed diagonally.
- Long Throw-ins: Use the L or R buttons during throw-ins to launch the ball deep into the penalty box. This sets up excellent opportunities for instant headers or spectacular bicycle kicks.
- Goalkeeper Control: If you find defending difficult, make sure to set the goalkeeper to “Auto” in the settings, allowing the CPU to handle saves so you can focus on marking attackers.
