Hydlide Special (Japan) is a foundational action RPG released for the NES in 1986. Developed by T&E Soft, it helped pioneer the action role-playing genre by introducing real-time combat and an innovative health regeneration mechanic. Players take on the role of the knight Jim, exploring the fantasy realm of Fairyland to defeat the demon Boralis and rescue the princess.
How to Play
Your goal is to battle monsters across the overworld, gain levels, and collect magical artifacts to become strong enough to face Boralis. Since this is an NES release, the standard browser controls apply: use the arrow keys to move (D-pad), Z (A button) to toggle between attacking and defending, X (B button) to cast magic, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Manage your combat stance: You automatically damage enemies by bumping into them. Press the A button to switch between Attack and Defend modes; attack when striking, but switch to defend to reduce damage when you need to retreat.
- Stand still to heal: Whenever your health gets low, find a safe clearing away from monsters and simply stop moving to slowly regenerate your hit points.
- Grind safely: Start by fighting only the weakest slimes near your starting position until you gain a couple of levels. Wandering into new areas too quickly will usually lead to an instant defeat.
