Game description:

Hogs of War is a turn-based tactics game developed by Infogrames Sheffield House (the former Gremlin Interactive, renamed after Infogrames’ acquisition of the studio) and released for the PlayStation in 2000. It takes the Worms-style artillery formula fully into 3D, pitting four anthropomorphic pig armies against one another in a fictional First World War-era conflict. The game is best known for its comedic tone, with British comedian Rik Mayall and Marc Silk voicing the hogs’ constant wisecracks.

How to Play

In the single-player campaign, you pick a nation and build an eight-hog squad, then fight to conquer five regions from the other armies. Each hog can be trained into one of four classes: Heavy Gunners wield long-range firepower, Engineers specialise in explosives, Espionage hogs carry sniper rifles, and Medics keep the squad alive. Tanks and stationary artillery are also available on the battlefield. A hog that’s knocked out three times is lost from the squad for good, so managing your losses matters as much as dealing damage. Default PlayStation browser controls are:

  • Movement (D-Pad): Arrow Keys
  • Action Buttons (△, ○, ╳, □): S, X, Z, A
  • Shoulder Buttons (L1, L2, R1, R2): Q, W, E, R
  • Start / Select: Enter / Shift

Tips

  • Match each hog’s class to the job at hand: send an Espionage hog’s sniper rifle after distant targets while keeping Medics out of the open, ready to patch up wounded squadmates instead of taking point.
  • Since a hog lost three times is gone for the rest of the campaign, retreat a badly hurt hog to cover rather than pushing it into another exchange of fire.
  • Take a moment to look around with the free 3D camera before committing to an attack — cover and elevation matter just as much as firepower.
