Hellnight (released as Dark Messiah in Japan) is a distinctive first-person survival horror game released for the PlayStation in 1998. Developed by Dennou Eizou Seisaku-jo and published by Atlus, the game traps you in the sprawling, multi-level labyrinth of the Tokyo subway system. Unlike traditional survival horror titles of the era, you have no weapons to fight back; your only option when confronted by the mutating creature pursuing you is to run and hide. You must navigate the dark, atmospheric tunnels, solve puzzles, and recruit companions whose unique abilities will help you survive your escape.
How to play
Your objective is to explore the subterranean “Mesh,” gather clues, and escape the Tokyo underground while constantly evading the mutant pursuing you. Since combat is impossible, survival relies on situational awareness and knowing when to run. In your browser, use the Arrow Keys to move and navigate menus. The PlayStation face buttons (Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle) are mapped to Z, X, A, and S. Use Enter for Start and Shift for Select to manage your inventory and map.
Tips
- Listen carefully for the creature’s footsteps; sound is your primary warning system that the monster is nearby.
- Companions are incredibly useful but vulnerable. If the monster catches you, your active companion will be killed permanently, giving you a chance to escape but depriving you of their unique skills.
- Don’t sprint constantly unless you are actively being chased. Running is loud and can alert the creature to your position faster than walking.
