Game description:

Hellfire is a challenging side-scrolling shoot ’em up released for the Sega Genesis in 1990. Originally an arcade title developed by Toaplan, the game stands out in the crowded shooter genre due to its tactical weapon system, requiring you to constantly adjust your firing angle to handle ambushes from all directions.

How to Play

You pilot the Sylphide starfighter through six intense stages, dodging environmental hazards and taking down the Black Nebula forces. Rather than picking up different types of weapons, your ship is equipped with a single powerful cannon that can fire in four different directional configurations: forward, backward, vertically (up and down simultaneously), and diagonally (four ways). You must manually cycle through these modes to hit enemies based on your positioning.

  • Move: Arrow Keys
  • Fire: Z
  • Change Firing Direction: X
  • Start: Enter

Tips

  • Learn the cycle: Your firing direction always cycles in the exact same sequenceโ€”forward, backward, vertical, and diagonal. Master quickly double- or triple-tapping the change button to instantly select the right direction in an emergency.
  • Use the environment: Many stages feature tight corridors or obstacles. The vertical and diagonal firing modes are essential here, allowing you to safely destroy enemies behind walls or above you without putting your ship in the line of fire.
  • Watch your speed: Speed-up power-ups are crucial for dodging fast projectiles, but taking too many will make your ship overly sensitive, increasing the risk of colliding with the terrain.
