Hellfire 2p Ver is a classic horizontal shoot ’em up released for the Arcade in 1989 by Toaplan. As the pilot of the CNCS1 Sylphide, you must fight through the Black Nebula to stop the dictator Super Mech. What sets this game apart from other shooters of the era is its weapon system: instead of collecting different weapon types, you instantly toggle your ship’s single primary weapon between four firing directions (forward, backward, vertical, and diagonal). This 2-player version differs significantly from the single-player release by allowing simultaneous co-op play and featuring instant respawns upon death rather than sending you back to a checkpoint.
How to Play
Navigate through enemy-filled stages while strategically switching your firing direction to handle threats from all angles. In the browser emulator, use the following default Arcade controls: press Shift (or 5) to insert a coin, and Enter (or 1) to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move your ship, press Z to shoot, and press X to cycle your firing direction.
Tips
- Master the weapon switch: Don’t just stay on forward fire. Many levels are designed to trap you if you don’t utilize backward or vertical firing to clear obstacles and enemies from behind or below.
- Use the terrain: The diagonal firing mode is excellent for hitting enemies hiding in corners or behind walls where your ship cannot safely travel.
- Coordinate in co-op: Since this is the 2P version, work with your partner to cover different angles simultaneously, taking full advantage of the instant respawn system during tough boss fights.
