Hard Puncher, the original Japanese release of Konami’s 1988 arcade boxing game The Final Round, puts you in the ring to fight your way up the KBA (Konami Boxing Association) rankings. Before stepping onto the canvas, you customise your boxer by allocating points across speed, power, and stamina to suit your fighting style. This classic 2D brawler breaks up the intense three-round bouts with training mini-games that let you further improve your boxer’s stats as you climb toward the championship.
How to Play
In the browser emulator, use the arrow keys to control your boxer’s movement in the ringโstepping in to attack or retreating to avoid blows. Map your action buttons (typically Z, X, C, or A, S, D depending on your emulator settings) to throw different types of punches and block incoming strikes. Press Enter to insert a coin and Shift to start the match.
Tips
- Balance your initial stat distribution. Putting everything into power might seem tempting, but without enough speed and stamina, faster opponents will easily outmaneuver and exhaust you.
- Don’t just trade blows head-on. Focus on defensive footwork to step out of range when your opponent telegraphs a heavy attack, then immediately move in for a counter-punch.
- Take the training mini-games between bouts seriously; the stat boosts they provide are crucial for surviving the much tougher opponents in the later ranks of the KBA.
