Game description:

Gyruss (Japan) is a 1988 shoot-’em-up for the Famicom Disk System, developed and published by Konami as an expanded remake of their own 1983 arcade classic (designed by Yoshiki Okamoto, who also created Time Pilot). Your ship orbits the rim of the screen, firing inward at the center, as you warp planet by planet through the solar system toward Earth — the home version pushes the journey further than the arcade original, adding Pluto, Venus, Mercury, and the Sun alongside Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars.

How to Play

Blast waves of enemy ships as you close in on each planet, then clear a bonus “Chance Stage” for extra points before pushing on to a boss fight — a feature the arcade original didn’t have. Controls: Arrow Keys to rotate your ship around the screen, Z for your main shot (unlimited ammo), X for the limited-use super phaser, Enter for Start (pause), and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Grab the satellite pods enemies drop — they upgrade your main shot to a double gun, which matters once the screen fills with ships.
  • Save the super phaser (X) for boss fights and crowded Chance Stages rather than burning it on stray enemies — it hits far harder than the standard shot, but you only get a limited number of charges.
