Game description:

Gunbird Japan is a classic vertically scrolling shoot ’em up released for the Arcade in 1994. Developed by the renowned studio Psikyo, it stands out for its vibrant anime-inspired art style, eclectic cast of characters, and the developer’s signature fast-paced, bullet-hell gameplay. Players choose from a roster of unique adventurers, each with their own distinct attack patterns and screen-clearing bombs, as they embark on a quest to collect pieces of a magical mirror.

The objective is to survive waves of enemy fighters and defeat massive, multi-phase bosses at the end of each stage. For this Arcade title, the typical controls map the joystick (Arrow keys) to movement, with one button (Z) for your main rapid-fire attack and another (X) to deploy your limited stock of powerful bombs. Holding down the fire button charges a unique character-specific melee or secondary attack.

  • Use charge shots strategically: Your charged attack is powerful but leaves you momentarily vulnerable; use it to quickly take down medium-sized enemies before they can flood the screen with bullets.
  • Don’t hoard bombs: If you find yourself trapped by a complex bullet pattern, use a bomb immediately. Surviving is always better than losing a life with bombs still in stock.
  • Watch your hitbox: Your character’s actual vulnerable area is much smaller than their sprite, usually centered on their torso, allowing you to weave through seemingly impossible bullet spreads.
