Game description:

Grand Prix is a top-down racing game published by Activision for the Atari 2600 in 1982. You steer a Formula-style car through winding circuits, racing against the clock to record the best possible time across five laps. Four game variations let you pick between two track layouts and one- or two-player competition.

How to play

Push the joystick up (↑) to accelerate and down (↓) to brake; steer with left (←) and right (→). Player 1 uses the arrow keys with Spacebar as the trigger; player 2 uses TGFH with A. Your goal is the lowest five-lap total. Press F12 to reset, F11 to cycle game variants, and Alt+P to pause.

Tips

  • Brake before the bend, not in the middle of it. A clean entry and early exit saves far more time than fighting a late braking point.
  • Touching the barriers does not end your run but scrubs speed — staying clear is consistently faster than bouncing off the edges.
  • Activision ran a real patch programme: mail in a photo of a qualifying lap time and you could earn an embroidered cloth patch — a concrete benchmark if you want something to chase beyond your own best.
