Flashback: The Quest for Identity is a cinematic action-platformer developed by Delphine Software and published for the Sega Genesis in 1992. You play Conrad B. Hart, a secret agent who wakes in a jungle with no memory, then pieces together an alien conspiracy that stretches from Earth’s outer colonies to the neon streets of New Washington. The character animation was rotoscoped from live-action footage, giving Conrad a weight and fluidity rare for the era.
How to play
Conrad moves deliberately — more like a person than a sprite. Arrow keys walk him left and right, crouch (↓), or interact and look up (↑). The Z, X, and S keys map to the three Genesis face buttons and handle firing your blaster, performing a dodge roll, and drawing or holstering your weapon. Enter pauses the game.
Teleporter booths scattered through each area act as mid-level checkpoints — activate every one you find so a death does not push you back further than necessary. Combat rewards patience: step into cover, roll through incoming fire when there is no safe angle, and shoot from a protected position rather than trading hits in the open.
Tips
- Your hologram projector draws a guard’s attention to a fixed point — use it to pull enemies out of position before crossing an exposed area, especially later when patrols tighten.
- The force shield absorbs a limited number of hits; activate it deliberately for unavoidable damage rather than leaving it running passively.
- Enemies follow fixed patrol cycles — watch one complete loop before committing to an approach, since the safe window is often narrower than it first looks.
