Fixeight is a vertically scrolling run-and-gun shoot ’em up released for the Arcade in 1992 by Toaplan and published by Taito. Players choose from eight distinct mercenaries â a mix of humans, robots, and aliens â each carrying their own weapon loadout, and fight through seven increasingly difficult stages. Unusually for the genre, up to three players can take on the mission together at once.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive each stage’s onslaught and take down the boss waiting at the end. Every character wields three weapons: Weapon A fires in whichever direction you’re moving, Weapon B fires straight upward regardless of your direction, and a Special attack unleashes a powerful, character-specific shot. Step on the colored “Change” tiles scattered through each stage to swap between Weapon A and B on the fly â there’s no dedicated switch button.
Default Browser Controls:
- Insert Coin: Shift (or 5)
- Start: Enter (or 1)
- Movement: Arrow Keys
- Fire Weapon: Z
Gameplay Tips
- Plan your weapon swaps: Change tiles are fixed in place each stage, so learn where they are so you’re on the right weapon heading into a boss fight.
- Watch for platforming and bike sections: later stages add quasi-platforming stretches over moving platforms and two speeder-bike segments, where timing matters more than firepower.
- Pick a mercenary that fits your style: each of the eight balances spread coverage against single-target damage differently.
